Free Halloween Events

Your kids will love the two different upcoming Halloween events at City Place Plaza. "Mr. Leo's Halloween Puppet Show," a seasonal favorite, is scheduled for Sunday, October 19, beginning at 11 a.m. with a second showing at noon. Bring your family back the following Saturday, October 25, at 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. for "Spooky Storytime with Wednesday," an interactive storytelling experience with songs, stickers and more.

While geared toward the little ones, children of all ages can enjoy these free, family-friendly Halloween events. 

Dia de los Muertos Event on the Plaza – Free to Attend

As Halloween ends and a new day begins, our community will come together to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a vibrant cultural tradition filled with art, music, and remembrance.

This year's annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, November 1, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at City Place Plaza. The event will feature live music, beginning with the Azteca Dance Group performing from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Latin variety band Shekere follows with performances at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Between those two sets, you can enjoy the music of the Tres Amigos Mariachi Band from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. 

The Dia de los Muertos event will also include a popup mercado with a variety of Mexican folk-art vendors, plus family activities, food, and more. Visit City Place for additional details.

While pet-friendly apartment living can be a wonderful experience for both pet owners and their furry companions, moving to a new apartment is typically a stressful and confusing time for dogs and cats. The change of environment and routine can cause anxiety and fear, and it may take time for your pet to adjust. 

To help make the transition as smooth as possible and shorten the adjustment period, we asked one of our residents, Myles Arceneaux, who shares an apartment with his feline friend, to provide a few pet-friendly apartment living tips. By following these tips, you can help your furry friend feel safe, comfortable, and happy in their new home.

How can I make my pet feel less stressful when moving?

"Ask a friend or relative, if possible, to look after your pet so they’re away from the chaos of moving," says Myles. The process of packing, moving, and unpacking disrupts your pet’s familiar environment and can be overwhelming, causing them to become anxious or exhibit behavioral changes. They may become destructive or refuse to eat or drink. Some pets become dehydrated, lethargic, or even sick because of the stress and strain. Additionally, frightened pets may become lost or injured during the move, especially if they are not secured or supervised the entire time, which can be difficult to do during a move. Leaving your pet with a friend or relative during the moving process can help avoid some of that fear and anxiety.

How can I help my pet adjust to a new apartment?

"Make sure you have places in your apartment where they can relax and feel safe," says Myles. Like humans, pets need their own space to feel comfortable and secure. Having at least one designated place in your apartment for your pet, such as a bed or a crate, can provide them with a sense of ownership and security. They can retreat to this space whenever they feel tired or stressed, and it can help them feel more relaxed.

Myles also recommends you provide your pet with certain toys, treats, etc., that they are accustomed to from your previous home. Pets often form attachments to specific items they associate with their former home, such as their favorite toys, bed, or blanket, and familiar scents and tastes can be soothing to them. Bringing these items to the new apartment can help your furry companion feel more comfortable and secure. 

Keep in mind that it could take a little time to adjust, so your pet may not immediately show interest in their old toys and treats. Be patient and allow them to explore and get comfortable in their new surroundings at their own pace.

Routine helps reduce a pet’s stress.

"It is always best to have your animal on a consistent schedule," says Myles.
 
Dogs and cats thrive on routine, and having a consistent schedule helps them feel more secure and confident in their environment. Consistent routines provide a sense of predictability and stability for pets, which can help reduce their stress levels. By knowing what to expect, pets can feel more relaxed and confident in their environment.

Leaving your pet alone in a new apartment.

Although it is not always possible, try not to leave your pet alone for the first few days in an unfamiliar environment. Then start with a short period away, giving your pet time to adjust to being alone in their new home.  

"I like to leave animal videos from YouTube on for my cat when I’m away," says Myles. "I also open the patio blinds and place his bed down in front so he can relax and look outside."

Some pets feel more comfortable left in a crate, but Myles says if you haven't used this method in the past, it may be hard for them to adjust.

Be Patient & Give Your Pet Time to Adapt

Helping your pet adjust to a new apartment requires patience and understanding. By setting up a designated area, introducing them to the space gradually, sticking to their schedule, making the space feel familiar, and providing plenty of attention and affection, you can help your pet feel more comfortable and secure in their new environment. With time and patience, your pet will adjust to their new home and be happy and content once again.

The Canopy at Springwoods Village apartments recently celebrated the grand opening of its dog park, and the event was a huge success! Residents, both two- and four-legged, came out for a fun afternoon with free treats and doggie play dates. The staff enjoyed spending time with residents and meeting their beautiful fur babies.

The Canopy's dog park, open to residents, officially opened October 7th, but we celebrated the grand opening on October 9th.
